A day at the Huntington Botanic Gardens was a day to remember….I had grown the large pink polyantha ‘Excellenz von Schubert’ for years without knowing what it was. I identified it at The Huntington and this gave me great pleasure. This rose is often confused with ‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’ which is very similar.

‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’. Modern. Modern Shrub. Deep pink. Repeat-flowering. Except in one important respect, this is a rose with all the virtues. It is vigorous, healthy and easy to grow, is handsomely foliaged, flowers very freely and has the sort of habit that pleases fastidious gardeners who look to the outline and appearance of the whole plant. Where it falls down is in lack of scent, which is a considerable drawback for a rose with its appearance of old-fashioned charm. The modest-sized blooms are deep pink with a little yellow at the base, shaped like pompons with many small petals, and appear in big clusters of up to 30 flowers. They continue to appear, with rest periods in between, through summer and autumn. It will give good value as a garden plant, growing to about average height, with many light green leaves. Zones 4-9. Lambert, Germany 1934. (Parentage:) ‘Robin Hood’ x ‘Rudolph Kluis’.

.....Of Riethmuller’s other roses little trace remains. This is tantalising for Riethmuller, like Alister Clark, appeared to have had a broad aim in view. Except for ‘Titian’, his roses have a similarity of form, stemming no doubt from the fact that he used one rose, the little-known ‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’ extensively in his breeding programme. His roses are characterised by their attractive foliage and a great profusion and long duration of flowering.
