'White 'Ma Perkins'....is a sport of ‘Ma Perkins’ whose licorice aroma was bred into the David Austin line, and is largely responsible for the so-called myrrh scent borne by many of his English roses.

'Ma Perkins'. Modern, Cluster-flowered/Floribunda. Pink blend. Repeat flowering. ‘Ma Perkins’ gets its cupped flowers with central petals turning inwards from ‘Red Radiance’ and some of its shell pink color from ‘Fashion’ . The fragrant flowers are double, cupped and large to three and a half inches (9cm) across. When they are open, the lovely full blooms are a clear pink color shaded with salmon. These last well both on the bush and when picked. The foliage is rich green and glossy on a tall and vigorous plant. David Austin saw the potential of the cupped, old world form flowers of this rose and used it in the breeding of ‘Wife of Bath’, which he has also used widely in the breeding of other varieties. Zones 5-10. Boerner, USA 1952. ‘Red Radiance’ x ‘Fashion’. National Rose Society Certificate of Merit 1952, All-America Rose Selection 1953.

[Used by Austin in his breeding program] It was known to produce plenty of excellent seed that germinated well (an important factor in rose breeding) and … it was one of the few Hybrid Teas and Floribunda Roses that had flowers of Old Rose appearance … rather like a Bourbon rose.

'Ma Perkins'. Cluster Flowered. Novelty is no criterion of excellence. ‘ Ma Perkins’, though raised by Eugene Boerner in 1952, remains one of the best pink Cluster-flowered Roses, its flowers as shapely and fragrant as ever, its blend of pale peach and coral as appealing. The plant is compact and easily grown, though you might sometimes have to guard against mildew, and the dark, matt green foliage is a lovely foil to the delicate flowers.. It never makes a great mass of bloom, but from one end of the season to the other there always seem to be a few exquisite flowers to admire. It was named after a popular broadcaster, no relation to the Perkins family of Jackson & Perkins. ‘Red Radiance’ x ‘Fashion’ Repeat flowering. Fragrant.
