'Comte Foy' rose References
Book  (Apr 1999)  Page(s) 39.

Comte Foy de Rouen Gallica. Lecomte, pre-1827. The author cites information from different sources... Pale pink... Bearing much resemblance to the Gallica versicolor... having the form of the ordinary Centifolia... One sees Savoureux listed as the breeder; 'Lecomte's roses were evidently taken over by Savoureux about 1828.

Comte de Foy. Lecomte, 1827
Synonym: Comte Foy de Rouen (at L'Haÿ); since 1900
Habit: short sgrub, less upright than the gallica types; slender branches, without pricles or bristles. Foliage: light; quite small , rounded leaflets. Bloom: clusters of 2 to 3 blooms (some solitary blooms); double, cupped; petals organised in quarters, reflexed. Colour: Crimson-red in the centre, passing to lilac; outer petals passing to violet-white. Fragrance: weak.

Sources: Boitard (1836), p. 204, 209 and 212; Desportes (1828), no 950; Hardy, Journal, 1828, p. 291-292, and catalogue of Luxembourg, ca. 1852-1860; Prévost, catal. 1829, no 339; Vibert, catal. 1829, no 852. Trade: none. Collections: author, L'Haÿ.

It is Hardy, chief gardener of Luxembourg, who describes this variety first, in his Journal of 1828 under the heading *Novelties": "Comte Foy ... Vigorous shrub, with sparsely spread out stems and branches, armed with very short prickles, unequal, few in number; petioles spiked and with small glands; leaves composed of three to five lanceolate leaflets, of a beautiful dark green, with fairly regular serrations and curved below, flat. Flowers quite numerous, of a very large size, full, well made, emerging in pairs or three together; petals of an ordinary pink in the center, of a pale pink and a little purplish in the edges, then taking a darker and purplish tint throughout the flower, rolled in the middle, crumpled in the other parts, reflected on the outside , irregularly indented at the top."
This rose is generally attributed to a rose grower of Rouen named Savoureux. Actuall, he commercialized it, but it was bred by an amateur of the town, named Lecomte....
The name 'Comte Foy de Rouen' which is encountered in the Catalogue 1900 of L'Haÿ, aimed probably to distinguish this 'Comte de Foy' commercialized by Savoureux, from another Gallica, 'Provins double panaché', quite similar to Rosa gallica 'versicolor', obtained by Vibert, which Prévost, in order not to be outdone, named for himself 'Comte Foy' (extinct today).
