'Duc de Guiche' rose References
Book  (3 Jan 2001)  Page(s) 49.

[Jean-Pierre Vibert wrote in 1824] many of our [rose] names are somewhat redolent of the Thousand and One Nights. We have the 'Berceau d'Amour', the 'Temple d'Apollon', the 'Ceinture de Vénus', etc. Ancient Rome has indeed added something to our nomenclature, and we would have been menaced by the 'Sénat Romain' but for the good fortune of having discovered that this rose was the same as the 'Duc de Guiche'.

Duc de Guiche ('Sénat Romain') Gallica. Breeder unknown, pre-1810. The author cites information from different sources... Lilac-pink of a very distinct color... crimson... violet red... This variety was at the Soucelle château; Prévost, who describes it, gives 'Sénat Romain' as a synonym... Prévost does not claim it as his obtention; he appears to have first gotten involved with roses ca. 1811.

Duc de Guiche Gallica. Before 1810... blooms singly or in clusters of 2 to 3... There is some question about this variety as neither the history nor the authenticity of this rose has been clearly established... older descriptions do not match the rose that is being sold by this name today... the specimen at L'Haÿ, by the way, corresponds to the older descriptions... Hardy listed this rose in the catalog of the Luxembourg Gardens (c. 1850-1860). Gravereaux said it was in the collection at Soucelles château, which would make it even older (c. 1810), however the inventory for the collection at that time has been lost so it's not possible to verify this... It is named for Antoine, Comte de Gramont, Duc de Guiche (1789-1855)... the synonym 'Sénat romain' was used after the Restoration
