Breeding with Rosa gigantea was then taken up by a Catholic priest in California called George Schoener (1864-1941) Only one of his hybrids is thought to be in existence: Glory of California was given a special award at the Bagatelle annual competitions in 1935 and is said to grow still at Sangerhausen, but the plant there is pale pink, whereas Schoener’s original ‘Glory of California’ was yellow.
