The Vintage Gardens Rose book tells us that it is “in the mold of such beauties as ‘Belle Portugaise’, this rose offers large, full, tea-like flowers of deep carmine-rose to purple; a great spectacle when in bloom. The habit is less climbing, more shrub-like and arching.” The bloom colour shifts between lavender pink and carmine-red. This rose is Spring blooming.

Book (1971) Page(s) 180. Includes photo(s). 'Sénateur Amic' Cerise-pink, early summer, 20ft (6.1 m.) 1924 Raised by P. Nabonnand, France. Parentage: R. gigantea x 'General MacArthur'. A vigorous and free-flowering climber for the warmer garden, flowering early. Most spectacular in Riviera gardens, however it grows well enough in cooler but not cold areas, especially if planted on a south or west wall. Flowers bright cerise-pink, semi-double and showing boss of yellow stamens when fully open, petals rather loose and irregular, bud long-pointed, flower up to 4½ in. (11.4 cm.) across when fully open; as the flower matures it becomes a warmer pink with shades of terracotta. The flowers are borne singly or in clusters of 2-3. Scent slight. Early June but in south Europe March to April to early May. Foliage light green with 3-5 leaflets, rather susceptible to mildew and black spot but still worth its place where it can be grown well, since its sumptuous effect is unrivalled in its colour early in the rose season. Like other gigantea hybrids, it makes strong young shoots after the flowers are over and to encourage these the old flowering shoots should be pruned out as soon as the flowers are over.
