Origin:
Bred by Mathias Tantau (1882 - 1953) (Germany, 1943).
Introduced in Germany by Rosen-Tantau/Tantau Roses in 1951 as 'Tantau's Ueberraschung'.
Introduced in Australia by Hazlewood Bros. Pty. Ltd. in 1954 as 'Tantau's Surprise'.
Class:
Floribunda, Polyantha.  
Bloom:
Crimson.  Mild fragrance.  30 to 40 petals.  Average diameter 3.5".  Medium to large, full (26-40 petals), in small clusters bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Glossy, dark green foliage.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  
Patents:
Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).
Notes:
Sangerhausen describes the color of the blooms as dark luminous red, lists it as a Hybrid Polyantha, and gives a date of 1943.
