Origin:

Bred by Jean Poncet (France, 1840).
Introduced in France by François Lacharme as 'Clémentine Séringe'.
Introduced in France by Miellez in 1840 as 'Mistress Wood'.

Class:

Hybrid Perpetual, Portland.

Bloom:

Light pink, lilac shading. Strong, centifolia fragrance. Large, full (26-40 petals), flat bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

5 to 7 leaflets.

Growing:

USDA zone 6b and warmer. Very vigorous.

Four different hybridizers are credited with this rose: Plantier, Miellez, Wood and Lacharme. See References. The breeder "Wood" is a misunderstanding of the synonm.

Caroline Clémentine Joséphine Storkinfeld married in Bern, Switzerland, Nicolas Charles Seringe (1776 Longjumeau - 1858 Lyon), French botanist, director of the botanical garden Tête d'or (1830-1858). She was probably the daughter of a dancing couple Storkinfeld who performed in Parisian theatres around 1786. M. Storkinfeld later became professor of dancing in Geneva and Bern. Mme Storkinfeld advertised 1816 about dancing lessons in Zürich. The rose is thus dedicated either to Mme Seringe or her daughter Marguerite Clémentine Seringe (b. February 25, 1815 Bern).

Mrs. Wood (Mary Ann Paton) (October 1802 Edinburgh - July 21, 1864 Chapelthorpe) was a celebrated soprano in the 1820s to 1840s, retiring in 1843 to Yorkshire.
