Grew this one in the early 80's in 6a Columbus, lost it during a not very cold winter (reading old ARS annuals it does seem tenderness was an issue with this one, ahem)..............oh I am in love with this one again! Very full petaled blooms, earthy vermillion/orange with putty straw yellow reverse, glossy slick foliage, seems to do well as an own root. The old ARS annuals in the POP (RIR) noted a "blue" tone to the orange----yep, it is there! The orange gets a little dusky-ashy a la Smoky and contrary to the old "reviews," I LOVE this tone to the bloom. The earthiness of the bicolors, the glossy leaves and the numerous small, prickly thorns remind me of Typhoo Tea................the old POP/RIR reviews stated this one, besides being tender, is a most miserly bloomer with some reviewers basically questioning if it is even remontant. Just got 3 big and lovely blooms off my "big" band, sure would love too see more, but really happy with what I have seen as it is.....................
