The sport from 'Lady Zia' showed up in a bloom of about the usual sixty bricky red petals, among which was a cluster of about half a dozen coloured light yellow. Budding-on produced plants only some of which carried new characteristics of colour change, i.e., lower petal count, unpleasant odour and pale green leaves of a very rough texture. Its value would be a curio only.

Wondrous Ways! ....Further observations during the year support my theory that, contrary to popular belief, a sport may carry more than one change of characteristics from those of the parent. For instance the sport from 'Lady Zia' not only has undergone a colour change from bricky red, to light yellow with some red veining, but has changed its reflexing petal form to unflexing, has greatly reduced its petal count, together with a change of texture of its foliage, and with a slightly unpleasant odour.

[ No evidence has appeared that this unnamed sport of 'Lady Zia' was ever introduced

'Caroline' In somewhat the same colour group as 'Lady Zia', but a little lighter. Neither is well formed except in the autumn. 'Caroline' is the better grower.

Lady Zia gave all malformed flowers in the spring after being excellent last autumn.

Lady Zia  HT. The colour of this variety was something out of the ordinary, and might be best described as a light orange-red. The blooms are well shaped, of exhibition standard, and most attractive. We could get only low growth in the one season, but no sign of any weakness showed up on the plants.

Lady Zia HT. (Park 1959) This good novelty is a brilliant cherry red. The growth is good and the flowers are produced on long stems. Blooms are inclined to split at certain times of the year but this does not seem to detract from its brilliance. A good garden rose.

W. C. Thorn. What's In A Name. 'Lady Zia' was named for the Lady Zia Wernher, daughter of the late Grand Duke Michael of Russia and wife of Sir Harold Wernher of Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. The fabulous collection of works of art at Luton Hoo is of world-wide fame. The house and gardens are open weekly to the public.

Lady Zia HT. (Park 1959) It resented England's very wet summer of 1958 and was most unimpressive, but it was a real glamour rose there in 1959. It is doing wonderfully well here already. Its unusual shade of red, its form, size and growth are all excellent.

Lady Zia  H.T. (Park). This rose caused quite a sensation When put up at the Autumn Show, especially amongst some of the Trade, who love a rose of original colour shades that will always do well in the garden. Definitely not an exhibition rose I should say, but the turkey-red and cherry shades are romantically delightful, and I was, I think, almost as thrilled as the amateur raiser (B. Park) at the high award given. Strong grower with all the right habits except that a high proportion of the blooms are split. This does not detract from its beauty, and Australians do not let this alleged fault discount its attractiveness to the same extent as we do in Britain.
