I had this growing vigorously and blooming abundantly for me for several years (but alas lost it to some sort of virus or ? which swept through my collection). Because of various characteristics and similarities, I came to believe that it is Robert's 1854 'Abbé de l'Epée', a Damask Perpetual (though not very perpetual!). I wish I had it in my garden again!

Well, if anyone has done their homework on a foundling, it is you Brent. I'll merge "HRG Mottled Hybrid Gallica' with 'Abbé de l'Epée' tomorrow if that is OK with everybody else?
(I do realise that "tomorrow" is not exactly the five years mentioned in the last two paras of The Old Rose Advisor 1992, p289)

Well, but tomorrow is five years from four years and 364 days ago. I think that works (yes, my legal training is from Gilbert & Sullivan)...
Thanks!

This flower looks like one I fell in love with in photos-- Cosimo Ridolfi, what do you think?

The foundling known at HMF and elsewhere as "HRG Mottled Hybrid Gallica" I suspect to be this rose...and a very fine and worthy one it is, too!

Several roses have been suggested as candidates for this rose: Boula de Nanteuil, Belle de Crécy, Hector and Ombre Superbe. When it blooms again, we will take more pictures, including details of leaves, etc for comparison.
