For MelissaPej who asked in R. wichuraiana, who was the man....
My cursory search only turned up the 1894-1956 Edmond Proust and the rose 'Edmond Proust' was bred in 1901. Interesting.

That's what I found as well, and I doubt a rose was named after a small boy. I wondered if anybody had more information.

in 2012 Lloyd Chapman said that the rose was named for Auguste Barbier's father in law ~ http://www.annchapman.net.nz/barbiers

This rose is amazing.Hardy to the tips, prolific spring blooming with scattered blooms later. After the first bloom it freaks out and very quickly sends out a ton of shoots which are easily at least 10 feet tall.
They are pliable but extremely thorny so wear your thickest gloves or trick someone you dont like into training them.

Thank you flodur. We've altered it back further, to 1901 (as per the 2007 reference) and it had to be bred before it appeared in the literature before the 1902 references.

A wonderful rose. Is it like "May Queen" once-flowering?
