See E. Veyrath Hermanos a climbing Tea from France 5 years after the introduction of this rose. The bloom form and color range and foliage are much the same and may be the same rose. So I am not suggesting misidentification, but reintroduction of a German rose by the French.

One obstacle to this hypothesis is that none of the contemporaneous descriptions describe 'Kaiserin Friedrich' as a climbing Tea. The climbing habit of 'E. Veyrat Hermanos' is unmistakable. It is hard to imagine such an oversight on the part of observers in Germany, France, England and the United States, who were keenly interested in climbing roses.

It seems that most all Climbing Teas are sports. K.F. based upon parentage qualifies as a Tea/Noisette, having a noisette and a tea as parents. E.V.H. has unknown parentage. I really wasn't exploring the classification. I was interested in the likeness of the blooms and foliage of the two roses ...... such a similarity.

Cass, there are a number of early sources from Luxembourg, France and Germany which describe 'Kaiserin Friedrich' as climbing. I am sure more will come up in time.

If these two roses are indeed the same cultivar, then we really should find comments about failure to open in wet/cool spring weather. It is diagnostic of the plant we know as EVH. Now that it is winter, I will get some shots of the canes showing the reddish, soft wood which may be instructive.

I have posted a couple of photos of our EVH, from Branchi. It is true that we had a number of blooms which balled. However, it was only the first year of the plant and it was growing with enormous vigour. I will check the blooms coming season. Meanwhile, I can make some pictures of the wood.

Parentage is 'Glorie de Dijon' x 'Perle des Jardines'
Color Plate contained in Old Rose Advisor
I propagated this rose from the very old climber adjacent to the Fanek's Nursery in San Antonio in the mid-90's and made it available to Texas Rose Rustler's, after identifying it with the Old Rose Advisor.
