Ornement de la Nature. Netherlands, before 1814. Synonyms: Althée (Baltet, at Troyes), Anémone ancienne (Godefory), Gloria Mundi (Holland). Rose Anémone (according to Prévost, 1829). Habit: 1.30 to 1.40 m, but not really upright, smooth branches, some with prickles and bristles. Foliage: medium green, elliptical leaflets, sometimes quite large. Bloom: small, in clusters of 3 to 7, double, cupped; quarters quite badly organised; rosette around a central tender green eye which can become very large. Colour: carmine at the centre, simply pink on the periphery. Fragrance: Weak. Contemporary literature generally attributes 'Ornement de la nature' to the nurseryman Toutain, 1826. In fact, the sources of the period show that it came from Netherlands, where it was called 'Gloria Mundi' (Hardy). The synonym 'Anémone ancienne' was perhaps given when it was introduced in France. Baltet, at Troyes, called it 'Althée'. Gravereaux believed that this rose was at Malmaison during the times of Joséphine. Prévost, in his catalogue of 1829 describes it as "small, regular, very double, hypocratériform, light lilac-pink".
