William A. Grant. 'Francis E. Lester'.....so I sent an order to Peter Beales, and 'Francis E. Lester' is now making its way atop a huge plum tree, spreading a carpet on top in the early summer. and the perfume fills the garden. In early fall (at least what we call autumn in California) brilliant bouquets of hips offer a second round of colour to the garden. and a few blooms as well....The rose that gives Francis Lester a place in rose history was named for him after his death in 1945. It was one of a number of seedlings he was nursing. 'Kathleen' and an unnamed variety are given as the parents. All those who have written about it have nothing but praise.
