"HOLLAND DOUBLE WHITE ALTAI A double variety originally secured from a Netherlands nursery by the Morden Station and sent to me from there. This and similar seedlings originated at home since then, at the moment offer us our best double white roses in the completely hardy class. Some of the seedlings have a fault that seems to be characteristic of Altai hybrids that have double flowers, and that is a tendency for the outer petals to become discolored. This fault may be due in part at least, to the paleness of the flowers. White roses are always hard to keep looking attractive. If we had a deep red Altai for instance, it would probably not be in evidence. The Altai rose is so beautiful, large and single that to make it double seems to be to lower its dignity. In the color class, the pure Altai rose is not easy to improve."
