Showing both well-formed blooms, and asymmetrical ones. But I'm inclined to forgive a few imperfections on account of the smell, which is really sweet and powerful, and has a distinctive quality that no modern rose I have ever sniffed comes close to replicating. England, late May 2020.

Another picture of the strangely asymmetrical buds -- the asymmetry is pronounced enough that I doubt they'll develop into proper blooms. Not all buds on the plant are like this, thankfully. England, May 2020.

This seems pretty characteristic of my plant: as buds begin to open, they do so asymmetrically. On the first bud (the one pictured is the second) the part of the bud that looked shrunken eventually expanded and the bloom filled out beautifully on all sides, but then the asymmetry was nowhere near as marked as on this bud. This bud, on the other hand, never opened properly and was short-lived. All buds on my mid-summer flush last year had this problem: I had put it down to the plant having been recently bought (containerised) and needing to settle down. The bush itself has grown vigorously this year, and is covered in buds, but some are yellowing before opening and others show this malformation. I wonder if this tendency for uneven petal expansion is what one of the references meant where it stated that this rose "opens indifferently". May 2020, SE England.
