'Samuel Marsden'. Ken records he found this sport on a plant of 'Slater's Crimson China' and propagated it. It is a "pleasant pink" in colour. Ken registered this rose in 1987 with the American Rose Society, who advised they would put it on hold until they received written authorization from the nearest living relative. This was given in 1988 when Ken received consent from the Rev. Samuel Marsden IV, who followed the family footsteps into the church. In a handwritten note Ken's daughter Margaret comments that Samuel Marsden junior planted a Samuel rose in the grounds of the Mission House at Russell and afterwards visited Oihi: "I count it a very great honour to have a rose named after my ancestor." The blooms as described on the registration form are 2 centimetres deep and 7 centimetres in diameter with one bloom per stem. It is a spreading bush, growing up to 1 metre, and repeat flowering. An interesting footnote to the parent rose is that Ken says that the Rev. John Gare Butler planted a line of cuttings thought to be 'Slater's Crimson China', outside Kemp House. This rose was carried aboard the Active by one of the missionary wives.

p20. ....'Slater's Crimson China'....was one of the earliest roses introduced into new Zealand - indeed there is a tradition that it was, with the 'Sweet Briar', among the first roses planted by Samuel Marsden's C.M.S. missionary families.
