The rose book, a practical treatise on the culture of the rose (1864) James Shirley Hibberd La Boule d'Or does not deserve its name, it lacks colour and compactness, but it blooms most abundantly, and is indispensable.

La Boule d'Or is very hardy, and has wintered perfectly intact out-of-doors with three tiles over its roots and a little straw tied round the base of the plant.
