Oldtimer, HT. (Kordes, 1969). Although at least one German catalogue lists this rose as 'Old Timer' and some Australians list it as 'Old Time', the above is the name under which it is registered -all one  word. The blooms are of good form and in shades of copper. It does not bloom freely and it is very thorny but its new colouring is most attractive. It dies back a little though not nearly as badly as 'Valencia' in the same colour group.

Oldtimer Here is that once-in-a-decade rose that seems to have been created for display in a sterling bud vase on a treasured Chippendale breakfront. Just the size of 'Oldtimer's perfectly-formed, high-centered blooms is truly impressive, for they reach OVER 7 INCHES in diameter.  But the colour of this fine Hybrid Tea is its most magnificent characteristic. The blooms are a delicate apricot-gold, and seem to give off an antique copper glow in the sunshine. 'Oldtimer' has 25-30, thick satiny petals, which roll open until they are recurved and slightly quilled, and finally drop cleanly. Blooms are borne singly, on exceptionally strong 9 to 14-inch stems, and have a light, fruity fragrance. The upright plant averages 3 1/2 feet in height, is covered with leathery pointed foliage - and blooms continuously all season long. 'Oldtimer', a descendent of  'Charming Vienna', was hybridized in Germany by the famous firm of Willhelm Kordes Sohne, creators of many other prize-winning roses. It was introduced by the Jackson and Perkins Co., Medford, Oregon.

Oldtimer HT. (Kordes). A very lovely old-gold colour. About 27 petals, and a sweet scent. High centred flowers, and good foliage. This looks most promising with good growth, and is a welcome addition in this colour. ('Chantre' x 'Bronze Masterpiece'.)

Oldtimer. HT. (R. Kordes, 1969). Parentage not given. The raiser distributed first 'Vienna Charm' with its wonderful new colouring and tall rangey growth plus countless fine thorns. As I saw it in Kordes' nursery in Germany in 1963, it had excellent form and it was chosen as best bloom in the Amateur Classes at the R.N.R.S. show in London in 1965 but it has had very poor form on my seven plants - all 8 ft. to 10 ft. tall. Then Kordes' sent out 'Valencia' with better form but less distinctive colouring and poor growth. Now we have 'Oldtimer' with good form plus much better colouring and growth than 'Valencia'. I reported in 1969 on my seeing 'Oldtimer' in Britain in 1968. It appeared then to be very good and it is continuing in that way in my garden. Spelt correctly as one word. Renamed, illegally, of course, 'Coppertone' in the U.S.A.
