Book (Jul 1998) Page(s) 195-196. Avenant Before 1837. Habit: upright shrub, quite tall; strong branches, numerous prickles, bristles. Foliage: medium green; elliptical leaflets. Bloom: abundant blooming, clusters of 3 to 6 blooms; medium to large size; double, quartered; small eye in the centre; long sepals; outer petals reflex when fading. Colour: deep pink in the centre, clearly lighter on the edges. Fragrance: moderate. References: Sisley-Vandael, catalogue 1937, p. 6: Van Houtte, catalogue 1842, and following; Verdier, catalogue 1843, p. 10. Commerce: not. Collections: author, Gap-Charance, L'Haÿ. The first mention of this variety is in the catalogue of Sisley-Vandael of 1837 which announces it as "pink". This nurseryman was specialised in imports from the Netherlands and Belgium, is this variety originating from there? All the old catalogues describe it "pink" without ever adding "with paler edges": it is very surprising that this characteristic is evident on the specimen at L'Haÿ.
