A rescued rose: Portadown Fragrance (HT, Samuel McGredy III, before 1926), conserved by Janet Walker in northern Tasmania. It is grown in the US but is very rare now.  Portadown was the Irish township where the McGredy nursery was sited.  It looks Pernetiana (photo p. 50 of last year’s spring Journal). The bud shows the coral-pink colour of the original description, but the flowers can be clear pink. The plant is very floriferous, and low-growing (you have to pick it to get the lovely scent). No hips. It gets occasional black spot.  Bud photo below by Billy West in Janet's garden.

Portadown Fragrance, [“J.C.#7”]. HT. Good reliable rebloom. Best fragrance. Habit [diagram 3]. McGredy, 1931. [Provenance Santa Rosa Rose Gdn., Ca] This is a strong grower that simply stays low; very broad, cupped blooms with a wavy swirl of petals, soft rose-pink shading to deep peach-pink at the base and rich with the scent of Christmas candies.

I do not know whether I should include Portadown Fragrance among the pinks. It sometimes comes with a lot of orange in it, but pales to salmon and lemon. A glorious colour and a glorious perfume!

‘Patrick Anderson’, the best of McGredy’s for a long time, is a better grower than its obviously close relative, Portadown Fragrance, while the bloom is a well-built two-toned pink.

H. R. Darlington. Notes on Roses and Their Perfume.
Nearly everyone can distinguish and enjoy what is known as the Old Rose Scent, or Damask perfume, found at its best in ‘Dame Edith Helen’, ‘Mrs. Bryce Allen’ and ‘Hugh Dickson’. A variety of this perfume of a more vinous, or muscat character is found in Etoile de Hollande’ and ‘Crimson Glory’; while we may find another variant in which it is diluted with a honey perfume in the ‘Mme. Butterfly’ group and ‘Shot Silk’. The fine scent of Portadown Fragrance is, perhaps, intermediate between these two groups.
