'Purple Beauty' rose Reviews & Comments

A four year old own root bush (originally ordered from Heritage Roses) is becoming a favorite. It's a striking shade of dark dark lilac - violet that is similar to the amazing Sweet Intoxication. In fact Purple Beauty seems likes Sweet Intox's Hybrid Tea Uncle.. Has a solid 7/10 scent, a very nice bud and good substance when it opens. Even shinier leaves than its mama, Peace. A lot of the flowers actually do resemble the glamour shot by Cliff Orent found in the photo section here.

This will be my third season with this rose. This variety has a very nice deep purple rose with excellent flower form. It has remained short, perhaps because it is grown ownroot, but is vigorous. It survived my zone 5a winters twice and it looks like it is going to be really good this year - I think it has reached maturity. In addition to good form, it has good substance, great color, and an excellent fragrance. Repeat is good - could be better, could be worse. Does not quit during the hottest parts of the summer. The bush has good disease resistence but can fall to blackspot when the rest of the garden does - I would NOT consider this a BS magnet. I look forward to growing this variety for many more years. Highly recommend.

Thanks, Carl. I bought this last year on a whim from a catalog, own root as well. Yours is the most detailed account I have read so far. I treasure strong scent and this color which were mentioned in the catalog but I am glad to hear PB has good form & substance w/ decent performance too. I live in Los Angeles so disease is not too much of an issue and winter die back is irrelevant. On your description I think I will give this one a spot in the ground.

I'm glad you found my discription helpful. I've been trying to put a detailed comment on the roses I am growing when I see that no one else has made a posting. I always hate it when I see a variety I think I really want to grow and can't find any detailed information on it (see The 777 Rose). Hopefully PB works out for you as well as it did for me.
One more thing about this rose is to give it an extra year to mature - especially if own root. I was a little disappointed my first year with how it grew and was worried about it last spring because it didn't give me much growth. The blooms were also not that great. But toward the end of the summer last year and into this spring it has been building itself up very nicely. Has produced great blooms and thick canes so far this year. Quickly becoming a favorite.

Thanks again, Carl. I lived in Des Moines, Burlington and Dubuque as a child so I know growing hybrid teas can be challenge in Iowa. I live in LA where the roses never lose any size over the winter and my Purple Beauty is coming along well, it sure displays the "beauty" in it's form and scent. Nice shiny Peace leaves too. I applaud you effort to fill in comments where there are blanks, I'm always relieved when researching a rose to find some personal experience info.

Small world, I grew up in the Dubuque area (Cuba City, WI to be exact). I started growing roses there when I was in college and learned a lot of valuable lessons. Even though it is jut half way across the state from where I am now, Dubuque was a very difficult place to grow roses like this one. Des Moines is so much easier. At least when I put some cover on the roses I know something will come up - not the same story in Dubuque unless you get some of the very hardy varieties. The good thing though was that my parents place made a great test ground for hardiness a lot of the roses that survived there followed me here. Maybe one day I'll have the pleasure of growing roses in LA.
