Bred by Joyce L. Fleming (Canada, 1987).
Introduced in Canada by Hortico Inc. in 1993 as 'Roberta Bondar'.

Class:

Climber, Large-Flowered Climber.

Bloom:

Yellow. Moderate fragrance. Medium, full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters, cupped bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Tall, climbing. Large, semi-glossy, dark green foliage.

Height: 8'2" (250cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 5b and warmer. Can be used for cut flower, garden or pillar. Hardy.

Parentage:

King's Ransom × Buff Beauty (Hybrid Musk, Bentall, 1939)

Notes:

Joyce Fleming, the breeder of Roberta Bondar has published an article called The Pedigree and Story of Rosa 'Roberta Bondar' in which she discusses the breeding of this rose. The original cross was made on June 29, 1987. The most promising plants from this cross were on trial for 4 years before the one that was to become Roberta Bondar was selected in the summer of 1991. Budwood was delivered to Hortico Roses and the future Roberta Bondar was budded onto Rosa multiflora rootstock. The following year, the few maiden plants were evaluated and the decision was made to bud enough plants to list in Hortico's 1993 catalgue. The rose is named for one of Canada's outstanding women, Dr. Roberta Bondar, that country's first lady astronaut, a member of the crew of NASA's Space Shuttle mission STS-42.
