The Best Pæonies.
In examining a collection of Herbaceous and Tree Pæonies lately, we have decided that (although all are ornamental) there are in reality but a few worthy of cultivation. Of these the following is a list:
Tree Pæonies: Bijou de Chusan, Carolina, Colonel Malcolm, Comte de Flandres, Donckelaarii, Elizabeth, fragrans maxima plena, Lambertiana, La Ville de Saint Denis, Louise Mouchelet, Madame Stuart Low, Osiris, Ranieri, Jules Pirlot, Rinzii, Rosa Mundi, Triomphe de Vandermalin, Vandermaelii, Van Houttei, and Zenobia.

Chinese Tree Pæonies. — Pæonia Moutan.
These are the most splendid and showy of all flowering shrubs, and among the most rare.
The flowers are mostly fragrant, and all are double, unless denoted otherwise.  They are perfectly hardy, and will withstand the winters of our most northern States and the Canadas.  They bloom in May, ten to fifteen days before the Chinese Herbaceous varieties.
The following are imported varieties.  We can supply extra size plants of most of the varieties, at a moderate advance in prices.

Pivoines arborescentes.- Il y en avait 59 variétés, appartenant à M. Modeste Guérin, de Paris, parmi lesquellesj'ai noté, sans tenir comte du mérite attaché à la nouveauté: Elisabeth, - Madame Van Houtte, - Rosa mundi. Ce lot était superbe.

Les collections de pivoines étaient surtout dignes d'éveiller l'admiration du public. M. Dupuy-Jamain avait formé un groupe très-riche: parmi Celles de M. Modeste Guérin, le Souvenir de Madame Knoor, Rosa Mundi, Rosina, Madame de Vatry et Elisabeth, etaient surtout remarquables.
