'Spectacular' ('Danse de Feu', 'Mada') Modern. Large-flowered Climber. Orange-red. Repeat flowering. The oval buds of this rose open to scarlet red, fragrant flowers with 33 petals that have a cupped to flat shape. They occur mainly in clusters against glossy bronze foliage. ‘Spectacular’ is free flowering and maintains a colorful display all season long. It is very hardy, even tolerating shade, but is susceptible to black spot if left unprotected. It will climb to about 8-10ft. (2.5 – 3.5m) high. Zones 4-10. Mallerin, France 1953, ‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber x seedling of R. multiflora.

Peter Harkness. Climbers in the Modern Garden.
'Danse du Feu'. Mallerin, 1954. 'Paul's Scarlet Climber' x R. multiflora seedling. Light scent. 8 x 8ft (2.5 x 2.5m). For several years the Rose Analysis listed Wichuraiana Climbers & Ramblers in one table, and Large Flowered Climbers in another. It was only in 1955 that a new table was introduced, headed 'Perpetual or Repeat Flowering Climbers'. This was to allow for novel varieties like 'Danse du Feu' which fitted neither of the old groups. its impact was such that within a year of introduction it came eighth in the voting, and in 1965 occupied first place, where it remained for six years. Only three times has it missed a place in 43 years. Remontancy (the ability to repeat its flower) was not the rose's only novel feature. The colour of 'Danse du Feu' is rich orange scarlet, of a brightness that was startling in roses at that time. Dazzled by this, gardeners overlooked some drawbacks; notably the ageing of the flowers to an unpleasing purple shade, and mildew.
