The rose Richard Laxton is a hybrid perpetual, obtained as seedling by Mr. Thomas Laxton of Stamford (England), who sold the rights to Mr. Ch. Turner, nurseryman at Slough. Commercialized in autumn 1879, this variety was quickly distributed in culture, where it had a good ranking especially as an autumn bloom. However since it seems that such a resemblance with other roses was recognized, especially with Maréchal Vaillant, that it is no longer or almost not in english cultures. We have not compared the two varities regarding their resemblance, but possessing Richard Laxton since it was commercialized, it has given us always very pretty blooms...It has received several certificates of merit when it was issued, and it is only after the wards that it was found to be a synonym, which is rather funny of the judges. Richard Laxton is a vigorous shrub, having beautiful dark green foliage, giving in sufficient quantity beautiful large, full, crimson red roses, darkened brown.

CROSS-FERTILIZING AND RAISING ROSES FROM SEED IN ENGLAND
BY T. T. LAXTON, BEDFORD, ENG.
The parentage of H.P.'s Richard Laxton sent out by Mr. C. Turner, and Dr. Hogg in the hands of Messrs. Paul & Son, I regret being unable to identify; but with a large and continually increasing number of seedlings I have found it impossible to keep even the year's results in all cases distinct.
