Supplement, 1888-1898, to the Ninth Edition of The Rose Garden (1898)
By William Paul

BELLE POITEVINE (Rugosa); a fine addition to these hardy roses. The flowers are double and very large, of a clear satin rose colour; growth vigorous; a continuous blooming variety.

I acquired this rose about 5 years ago as a complete rose novice. I cannot say how thrilled I am with it -- absolutely no fuss, minimal upkeep, and the fragrance is to die for! My Belle's flowers are a little more structured than those pictured here, while still conveying that relaxed, romantic mood. The spring bloom is just massive; as the petals drop, a carpet of pink forms below. Then, repeat blooms come in waves, but my roses are never without a bloom from spring until hard frost in Northeast Ohio -- sometimes as late as October. As the plant goes dormant, the leaves turn bright yellow, rivaling the fall maple show. If you are looking for a large rose shrub with no drawbacks, I don't think you can go wrong here!

I recently watered my Belle Poitevine Rose bushes with Miracle Grow (sprayed per instructions with Miracle Grow watering system), and all of the unopened buds that were on the bushes dried up and fell off. In fact, many of the leaves are now dry and browning. What happened? And, what do I do to bring it back to the healthy state it was before using the Miracle Grow?

Rugosas really dislike being sprayed with anything and will get even by acting like you have described. It seems that although Rugosas are extremely hardy, they have leaves which are very sensitive. Beel Poitevine will recover in time.

Rugosas can not handle any type of liquid fertilizer like Miracle Grow. Your best bet is to use compost.

I chose this rugosa to plant at Wilmore Lodge in Lake Ozark, MO., Wilmore is the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Information site, over Jens Munk even though ARS ranked Munk 1 point higher than Belle. It bloomed continuously for me, did not get the lanky shape of Munk. Rugosas were the choice for planting as they do not like fertilizer and chemical sprays will kill them. Water is their mainstay. You have fragrance, hips, constant blooms, and no black spot, what more could you want?
