This is a very fragrant double flower, white striped purple - quite striking. Unfortunately it is one of the worst for black spot in England. According to Norman Young, the chances are that it is a sport from a purple variety called Victor Emmanuel, which was popular in Italy. He bases that guess on the fact that 'Variegata di Bologna' occasionally produces an all-purple flower, which no-one in England can identify.

'Variegata di Bologna' occurred in 1909 and is characterised by white blooms irregularly striped with purple. Its parentage has not been revealed, but it occasionally reverts to an all purple flower which has not been identified, but a Bourbon in this colour named Victor Emmanuel was long popular in Italy.
