Souv. D’un Ami. This came to us from Australia as “G. Whatson Rookwood tea”. I am convinced this is the true variety, matching original descriptions and the lithograph by hermann baisch in ‘Nestel’s Rosengarten’ 1868.

Thank you Tiffany for your donation to Rookwood of the “Bird Children” Tea (HRIA Journal autumn 2019 p. 31). Our member Ros McLusky has propagated from cuttings a number of the found Tea “George Whatson” so we are nursing all these young roses in their pots, in case they do not cope with heatwave days in the very exposed garden at Rookwood. Planting them in Barbara’s Garden in autumn will let them settle in before the beginning of summer 2021.

"George Whatson", from a 1919 grave in Rookwood Necropolis, NSW, which has many unidentified roses (given study names based on the nearest grave).  Flower usually pink, rarely apricot. Very full (about 60 petals + some petaloids). Occasionally quilled. Prickles age from red to brown to grey. Hips very rare. Moderate growth. Susceptible to mildew, can ball in spring. One of the suggested candidates for Souvenir d'un Ami. Photos top right and below by Jane Zammit.

Found Teas “Bird Children Pink” and “George Whatson” have both been suggested for the true Souvenir d’un Ami, but it did set seed at least once, and they have not shown persisting hips yet.

"George Whatson" B51. Likenesses were noted to an Argentinian found rose and to a rose in circulation in the USA as 'Souvenir d'un Ami'. Data sheets and photographs of "George Whatson" will be sent to Argentina and the US for comparison.

Jane Zammit. This is "George Whatson", firstly the original gravesite rose. See the challenge of identifying him, these last two blooms were on the same stem. Barbara thinks that a year is the minimum time needed to look at some of these roses to be able to see the full range of their form and colour variations.

“George Whatson” performs well in the Editor’s garden but can ball in wet weather. Usually mid pink; can be peach-coloured at times in NSW. Petal edges can ruffle. Photos by Jane Zammit.
