I received one of these from my mother (although my flowers are yellow/pink.  I have brought it indoors for the winter.  Any hints for what to do this summer.  Can I keep it potted and do this every year or will it effect the integrity of the plant?

Thank you,

Hi, OhioAngel. It's really helpful to know your USDA climate zone and the name of the rose. There should be a label on the plant.

Roses that are not sufficiently hardy for your zone can be over-wintered in an insulated garage. They are allowed to go dormant and monitored from time to time to be sure the soil is just damp. Each spring, the plant is put back outdoors when all danger of hard freeze is past, the soil is freshened up and perhaps a larger pot supplied, fresh compost put on the top and the rose is ready for a new season.

Growing roses in the house is not always successful. It can be done with powerful grow light, but most roses dislike dry forced air and suffer from insect infestations.

Please search the eZine for articles on roses indoors. Here is one that describes the conditions for growing roses inside:

Give it try! If the rose doesn't care for the house, you can gradually expose it to colder temps in the garage and let it go dormant for the rest of the cold season.
