The Morton Arboretum was founded in 1922 by Morton Salt magnate, Joy Morton. The arboretum's primary mission is the conservation and planting of trees. The 1700 acre arboretum outside Chicago has 4000 trees, shrubs and other plants.
With two partner institutions the Morton Arboretum maintains a virtual herbarium that accessible online at vPlants.org. vPlants.org has detailed information about species roses native to Illinois and Missouri.
