[From A Heritage of Roses, by Hazel Le Rougetel, pp. 21-22: Thomas Jefferson wrote] in his Garden Book (1766-1824, Reprinted Philadelphia, 1985)... seedlings of the 'Sweet Briar' were planted in 1767... By 1782 Jefferson was keeping a calendar of his blooming plants, recording a crimson dawrf rose in flower from 20 May to 25 July and noting that it was a species... 'Cherokee Rose' (R. laevigata) [was] grown at Monticello from seeds sent to Jefferson in 1794 by Governor Milledge of Georgia.
