I'd be keen to get opinions on my alternative mulching solutions. Several months ago I planted roses in a well prepared bed, laid cardboard then covered that in leaf litter. Today I had a close look at it all. The cardboard and leaf litter have morphed into the soil which is rich with worms. ive finished my underplanting and playing with some very lightweight broken slates, small pieces.
I'm happy with how it looks but a bit on the concerned side about possibly producing an impermeable mulch. I don't like wood chips or gravel as both always get worked into the soil.
