Climbing Charles Mallerin. Baldacci, 1960. Very strong grower. Blackish-red. Free flowering, but some blooms are loosely formed. Very fragrant.

p23 I was fortunate in being able to develop a race of very hardy continuous-flowering shrub roses. These include the deep crimson Hamburg (1935), the orange scarlet 'Bonn' (1950), and the deep purple-red 'Elmshorn' (1950), which are now widely grown as shrub roses.

p209 Hamburg Kordes 1935. Large, semi-double, opening flat. Dark, velvety-red with yellow stamens. Up to 20 blooms in cluster. 3.5 inches. Good fragrance. Early flowering. Winter hardiness -10 degrees C. (14 degrees F). Upright grower to about 4.5 ft. short pillar, hedge, groups. Resistant to disease.

Climbing Independence syn. 'Kordes Sondermeldung'. Baldacci, 1960. Moderately vigorous. Vivid orange- scarlet blooms which open slowly and are best in warm weather. Free flowering. Up to 10 ft.

The round, well-branched bushes of spinosissima varieties such as Double White, Double Yellow, or Mrs Colville (reddish-purple) will conceal the bare lower third of the lilac bush.

Toni Lander Poulsen 1961. Well formed, semi-double. Salmon orange. Up to 10 blooms in cluster. 3 inches. Slight fragrance. Height 20 inches. Ample branching. Bedding, cutting. Very free flowering. Does well under glass. Slightly liable to rust. Hardy.
