The Roses of 1882...
Abbé Girardin (bourbon, Bernaix) is a pretty, light [coloured] Bourbon-rose; fine form; expanded, expands easily and blooms faithfully, but has too thin petals, is therefore not lasting. Rank: 2-3.
(1883)  Page(s) 229.

The Roses of 1882...
Albert de Blotais (hybrid perpetual, Moreau-Robert) . Dark velvety violet; fragrant, finely formed, loosely filled, expanded, medium size bloom; dark foliage. Rank: 2.
(1883)  Page(s) 222.

Alfred Leveau (hybrid perpetual, Vigneron) belongs to the V. Verdier-race. It has short canes, reddish tips, a large bloom, which is not better than the matadors of this clan. Dispensable. Rank 3.
(1883)  Page(s) 229.

The Roses of 1882...
Alphée Dubois (hybrid perpetual, Fontaine) is no more than Préfet Limbourg according to bloom, wood and foliage. I saw the rose at Lambert & Reiter, Soupert & Notting and at Gebrüder Ketten. Away with the false Préfet.
(1883)  Page(s) 221.

The Roses of 1881... American Banner (tea, china?, G. Cartwright) has only value due to its fine tea fragrance and the lilac-carmine-red stripes on the outer petals, the inside of the petals is chamois-pink passing to whitish pink; fluttery; too weak canes for standards. Rank 2-3.
(1883)  Page(s) 229.

The Roses of 1882...
Ampère (hybrid perpetual, Liabaud) should not have been commercialized by Liabaud. The medium-size purple-violet bloom which fades greatly, has no filling, descends from Lion des Combats. Rank: 3-4.
(1883)  Page(s) 222-223.

Anicet Bourgeois (hybrid perpetual, Moreau & Robert) ranks higher [than Alfred Leveau]. It is said to descend from Sénateur Vaïsse x Mme. Victor Verdier, which is to be doubted, as no one has crossed blooms which are so close together. The wood is smooth, foliage large and glossy; the somewhat drooping bloom is globular, finely formed; fragrant; cherry-red passing to lilac like most varities of the Sén. Vaisse-group. Vigorous. Colour and fragrance of A. Colomb, but not its form. Rank 2.
(1883)  Page(s) 221.

The Roses of 1881... Antoine Devert (tea, Gonod) belongs to the Mme. Bérard or Gloire-de Dijon-race, is of noble cup form, fragrant, flesh-coloured with salmon-yellow center, but not characteristically different tahn others of its clan. As precursor of Beauté de l?Europe it had to be monetarized before the latter was introduced. Rank 2-3.
(1883)  Page(s) 229.

The Roses of 1882...
Archiduchesse Elisabeth d'Autriche (hybrid perpetual, Moreau-Robert) is similar to La Reine and something in the middle between Souvenir de la Reine d'Anglettere [sic] and Elisabeth Vigneron. The bloom is initially globular, then disc-formed; however the centre is as with most flat blooms (Elisabeth Vigneron, etc.) underdeveloped or tangled, curled; fragrant; fine foliage, long-growing. Rank: 2-3.
(1883)  Page(s) 223.

The Roses of 1881... Auguste Buchner (hybrid perpetual, Lévèque) belongs to the better roses of the year. Bushy habit; reddish-grey wood, densely armed with red prickles; foliage large, rough. Large bloom, loosely filled, fine form, purple-crimson with dark velvet; flat, short-cut petals, little fragrance. Rank 2-3.
