Book is subtitled: Glorious New Roses for American Gardens. I have this edition, published in 1993 (there is now a revised version). A gorgeous volume, covering a brief history of the rose, the goals and attributes of the English Roses, their use in the garden, and detailed growing techniques, including illustrated pruning guides. Best of all, this volume features gorgeous entries for each variety with a description, including David Austin's assessment of the strengths and weaknesses for each. Something included in this volume that is not in later volumes, is a line drawing illustrating each varieties' growth pattern with height and width measurements. I really like this, as it assists in giving a mental picture of how each bush might fit into the garden scheme. Also included for each is a quick reference box for each rose with an overall assessment, and fragrance notations, among others, which I also find very helpful. This volume also includes many of the 'discontinued' varieties in the US, and remains a great resource for the collector of these roses.
