We just planted a new rose bush. It has yellow roses. The flower petals are falling off the rose flower as soon as the rose opens up (blossoms). Why is this happening? Is it perhaps because the rose bush needs more water OR it is over-watered? We live in Zurich, Switaerland and we bought this rose bush from a very reputable place that sells rose bushes.

Sincere thanks in advance for any feedback that you can share with me. I look forward to your reply.

Warm regards,
Fotene

There are a number of reasons why rose petals might drop from the bloom a short time after the bloom has opened. One is that the rose is a single (four to eight petals) and after opening, normally drops its petals; another is that the weather is unseasonably warm and that contributes to the early loss of petals. Generally, over or under-watering will find a response in the foliage turning yellow or showing signs of stress rather than the petals. I am not familiar enough with weather conditions in Europe to comment intelligently beyond this rather general set of statements. Perhaps you might place your question in a more generalized area of inquiry. Good luck with your rose and I hope that you find an answer soonest. JD

Dear Jim,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I will call the nursery where we purchased the yellow rose bush and ask further questions on the proper care of our new rose bush. The weather has fluctuated tremendously since we purchased the rose bush, so this may contribute to the loss of it's petals.

I wish you a wonderul week and enjoy your summer!

This is one of those times when my rose mentor would tell me to look to the rose as my teacher. If it is dropping petals as soon as it blooms, it's telling you that it is not a happy rose.

There are a lot of yellow roses on the market, some with blooms with a few petals and some with blooms with almost 100 petals.

Are you growing the rose in a container? Does it get good drainage? Does the rose get enough sunlight? Is the container too small for the plant? I could keep asking more and more questions and still not answer your question specifically because any one of these factors and more can cause the rose to have problems.

You might want to check with the nursery where you bought the rose and they may have someone on staff that can give you more specific information.

Good luck with your rose.

Smiles,

Lyn

Dear Lyn,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will contact the nursery where we bought our yellow rose bush and ask the staff further care instructions. The rose bush gets plenty of sun light (over 6 hours a day) and plenty of water---as recommended for rose bushes in their first year or two. It may be losing it's petals because of the severe weather fluctuations here in Zurich , Switwerland this past month.

I wish you a wonderful week and Happy Summer!

Kind regards,
