Peter Beales (July 22, 1936 - January 26, 2013)

[From The Rose Summer 2002 (RNRS):] At the April 2002 Annual General Meeting of the Royal National Rose Society, Peter Beales was confirmed as President-elect for the years 2003-2005.]

[Ibid, p. 37: Peter Beales' first rose] was 'Pinta' in 1973, a shapedly, smallish-flowered creamy-white with Sweet Briar perfume. It came as a big surprise since, at the time, [Beales] was seeking a red. 'Royal Smile', named for Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, on her eightieth birthday, and introduced in 1980... a blush-white, also with a very strong scent... does well in warmer climates...

[From By Any Other Name, January 2013, p. 33:] k, Peter Beales died on Saturday, 26 January.....Peter trained as a nurseryman at the Grice Nurseries in North Walsham, and then started Peter Beales Roses on 1½ acre site at Swardeston, moving to Atteborough Norfolk in the late 1980s when he outgrew the original site. Peter won a total of 19 gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show and was given the Royal Horticultural Society’s top award. Those who have been lucky enough to attend the show will know why. A truly outstanding stand and display of old roses and his own new introductions. In 2003 he was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour in recognition of his success as a rose grower and also promoting gardening.
