Niels J. Hansen, gardener, hybridizer, President of the American Rose Society (ca. 1955-58)

[From "The American Rose Magazine, 1953, p. 11-13:] Niels J. Hansen, Vice President....was borne in Denmark where he attended the public schools and received a diploma in landscape gardening....In 1926 he became associated with Dr. Whitman Cross of Chevy Chase and helped with the development of one of the most important private rose gardens in the country. For more than 20 years he specialized in the growing of outdoor roses...Niels became a life member of the American Rose Society in 1927, served two terms as Director and two terms as member-at-large of the Nominating Committee.

[From The American Rose, 1971, p. 22:] In 1941 , he was awarded the Dr. W. Van Fleet Gold Medal of the American Rose Society “ For his new rambler rose “ Chevy Chase ' ” . In 1931 Niels Hansen became a charter member of the Potomac Rose Society , and was President of the Potomac Rose Society
