[From Rose Letter, August 2013, p. 3-4:] John N. May, Sr. (1840-1928)..... operated an enormous nursery in Summit, New Jersey, which he had opened in 1880. By the 1890s he was selling 20,000 plants a year, staffing his greenhouses with fifteen to 25 people......According to Lynn Forsell of the Summit Historical Society, May was a founder of the National Society of American Florists in 1892 of which the American Rose Society was a part until it branched out on its own in 1899.
