This is the first time I have ever reviewed a rose...and I'm reviewing it because Marianne is SO OUTSTANDING people need to hear about it!
This rose is remarkably robust. It arrived in Denver in early spring 2008, but wasn't planted until May, 2008. I did my best to keep it shaded and moist, yet it dried out on more then one occasion. By the time it was put into the ground I wasn't sure it would survive. However, it began to root and grow immediately. While it arrived in the mail with several intact flower-buds, only one managed to survive... and IT ACTUALLY BLOOMED!
This rose was a small rooted cutting; mistreated and abused, yet it still produced a flower...and what a flower, absolutely unique, a bloom the likes of which I've rarely seen on ANY rose. The blossom was superbly shaped, with that classic Gallican form. The delicacy of Marianne's colouration was breathtakingly beautiful: a solitary flower with near-universal appeal. Its beauty was praised by officers of the Denver Police Department; my 22 year old son and his friends; Catholic nuns; my wife; several members of a motorcycle gang, and a prominent American author.
This small and abused cutting has grown FAST in our heavy High Plains soil, out-pacing every one of the 15 roses I planted this spring! Several canes are now a strong four feet tall. The foliage has an 'old-rose' shape combined with a modern 'glossiness'; it is extremely healthy. There are NO indications of fungal disease anywhere on the plant. The only insects I've ever seen on 'Marianne' are leaf-cutter bees. I don't spray, and they are welcome to share.
On a scale of 1-10 , overall I rate Marianne a remarkable 10. She deserves every one of those points: IMO, this is one of the finest new roses i've seen in years.
Paul Barden has hybridised a masterpiece. I was very happy to hear that his roses will continue to be sold through other nurseries. {The Uncommon Rose is now out of business} I bought mine from Rogue Valley Roses and as you may have guessed, remain VERY happy with their material!
