In May 2007 I bought SYMPATHIE (band-type) from Vintage Gardens in CA. This is a great red climber! In only a few months it has shot up to 6ft and has had at least 12 very fragrant roses! I planted it as a replacement to the Bougainvillia that we lost, to our rather cold winter here in the Silicon Valley,CA. I had expected to wait at least a year to get flowers, as it was "just a stick" when
it arrived; so this has been a delightful surprise!
As I am rather new to cultivating roses . . . my question is: Why is this beauty so difficult to get, and why is it almost unknown in the industry??

Hello,
could you tell please
1. how long your rose been in bloom (when it finished blooming);
2. is it shade tolerant or certainly need full sun (I would like to plant one climbing RED rose in the spot where 2-3 hours "lunch time" sun and then late afternoon and evening sun);
3. what is the size of the flowers and what shade of red they are.

Sorry for asking - could not find full information (even in internet) about this rose, and I do not trust too much seller's information and nice pictures, I try to read gardener's feedbacks.
I just would not like to buy "wrong" plant.

Thank you.

This rose is popular here in Russia and sold in every garden center. It is beautiful and healthy, has medium fragrance. But it's not perpetual blooming sort. It blooms in June-July and then only occasionly later. Almost all the flowers are on the top and only few in the lower half of plant length.
We bend to the ground and protect climbers in deep autumn.

Where exactly in that vast country, Russia, this plant grows that way? I have a rose, bought in the name of 'Sympathy' ,or perhaps
'Sympathie'. It blooms only once a year, with only one tiny exception, i.e. with 3 or 4 flowers in late september this year. It can be that
southern Finland is not a right place for this rose. Perhaps it is wrongly named?

Silicon Valley is in Calif. USA, sir ! I suggest that you try DUBLIN BAY, it blooms in low light situations, but it has NO scent! But the color never turns that bluish tint and the
number of roses is abundant!

I live in Kazan, 800 km to the east of Moscow. Our climate is more continental than in Southern Finland. Warm May, hot summer, frosty winter. Though not this winter. We have no snow as yet. This year Sympathie bloomed at all levels and repeated it's bloom though not so intensive as in late June.

If you have only 3 hours of mid-day sun I suggest DUBLIN BAY. In Silicon Valley it blooms well even in shaded areas! The blooms are deep red, never turns bluish! They open loosely, this is a lovely rose. I put SYMPATHIE on a south wall in Silicon Valley where is gets burning sun! It is now 12 ft high, after only 15 months starting as a 10-inch stick!The canes are thick & heavy: we refer to it as 'Beanstalk".Leaves are intense green, very thick & shiny in texture. For its 1st year, roses do appear at all levels. The rose holds its color & form well, considering all the heat it tolerates!

SYMPATHIE(1964) is a solid dark red. It blooms in groups throughout the hot Silicon Valley summer in Calif. It grew 10 ft. in its first year! In late Sept. it stopped blooming altogether, yet, it continues to put out canes. In its first weeks, it grew rapidly; so do
NOT cut those thick, heavy, sucker-like shoots, as they will produce roses! Currently this climber reaches about 12 up the 2-story house! Perhaps it is even taller, because we
draped it across our windows, too.

I am the grower of SYMPATHIE now for 2 years. This rose gets Major SUN ( Sol major)here in the Silicon Valley along the south wall of our backyard ! For shade I suggest , DUBLIN BAY, it is a wonderful climber for SFO fog-filled yards! It is always in bloom, at least until ThanksGiving. It never turns that hideous shade of magenta/Blue that most reds will do. Note: there NO scent from DUBLIN BAY climber!

FEB 2011: this will be the 4th year for SYMPATHIE. It grew 15ft high in the 2nd year! We keep it that height afaginst a 2-story wall that gets intense Southern light in SiliconValley,CA. The scent is good the color is a rich dark red holding well and cascading down over the Sliding door, onto the yard. We call it the ~FairyTale Rose~ because it clings to the wall, almost asking for ' Rapunzel to come down ' . . . It adds a romantic look to this drab wall & produces stunning in the bunches of roses. It stops blooming in late August! ! But the very thick, leathery leaves stay nice.

One year later SYMPATHIE, 64 which I purchased from VintageGardens.com in CA. is now 9Ft. tall and is loaded with buds on our south wall here in Silicon Valley, CA. I can hardly wait for the red roses to open. It will get intense sunlight all year in this spot, so I hope to have plenty of roses! Last
year's roses (6) were nicely scented.
