This is one of my favorite roses. Several flushes of blooms in a season and covered in blooms each flush. Lovely fragrance. Dark, velvety, red blooms. A wonderful garden rose that is very vigorous. Winter hardy in zone 5 Michigan. I will always have this rose.

Thank you for the rating on hardiness. I'm in zone 5a, Stephen Big Purple is another vigorous one which survives many winters as own-root, while my Romanticas (Frederic Mistral and Liv Tyler) died after a few winters as own-root roses.

This has beautiful pink single flowers with lovely stamens. Makes a very large shrub, so give it room. Winter hardy.

Does Flamingo set hips? No descendants since the 50s

I don't remember any hips on Flamingo.

Thanks. Have you ever tried to pollinate it?

No, I never did. I no longer have my garden or I would try and let you know. I am in apartments in Florida to be close to my grandchildren. I do miss my beautiful garden. Good luck with your endeavors.

Much as I love roses, they couldn't compare with grandchildren. In Atlanta today, we're "enjoying" what's being called a Biblical event. Catastrophic wasn't bad enough. Ha. Enjoy Florida and the Grands!

Black Magic was a new bareroot last spring (2007) and it really took off and bloomed a lot. I love its dark velvety blooms and wish that I had gotten it a long time ago. It did not have a lot of dieback this winter (zone 5) and I'm really looking forward to seeing it bloom this summer.

Hi - I took a cutting from a rose of my mother-in-law's and I believe it is Black Magic but the original tag was lost. Does your Black Magic have streaks of white at the base of the petals in the center?

Hello....one red rose that tends to have the white streaks you are speaking of is Veteran's Honor. I think it was previously known as Lady in Red..... could be the one you have.

Black Magic does indeed have a white streak, similar to that of Veteran's Honor. It's visible in some of the photos of the rose.

Jimmy, if you are referring to the large flowered climber, Sombreuil, they are quite different.

Out of Yesteryear is a shrubby grower, a very large 8 x 8 bush that would require careful training by an experienced rosarian to grow as a climber. It is massively thorny. It roots if the tips of the canes touch the ground.

Sombreuil produces long, 10 or 12 foot canes that can be trained and tied to a structure. It has been in commerce for about 50 years and is an old standard in the USA.

'Out of Yesteryear' is a beautiful rose but lacks fragrance. It makes a large shrub, about 5' x 5' here in the low desert.

The rose often incorrectly distributed as Sombreuil is a very vigorous climber and uniquely fragrant. It gets about 10-12' in all directions here. Both are very prickly.

Robert, I'm suprised that OoY has no fragrance for you as it has a lovely fragrance to my nose.

Sharon, it could be climate related since the humidity here is particularly low, or it could be I can't detect this particular rose fragrance, but I get almost nothing in terms of fragrance from 'Out of Yesteryear'. I wish I did or could.
