This is a powerhouse producer of long stem beauties. My own root bush has not stopped blooming and there are always a few blooms on the plant at any one time. Grows well in hot weather, although bloom size and petallage are reduced. The flowers last a long time cut or on the bush, due to the superb substance of the petals. The rose has a habit of producing side flower buds on long stems even before the main flower bud has opened.

Hi Gabriel,
Yes it does look like a Peace, but we are 99.9% sure it is not. We have several Peace roses in our garden (which are also growing quite close to the Budapest) and we made many comparisons over an extended period of time to make sure it is not the same, we did not come to this conclusion quickly. Also we have a very old professional rosarian friend who used to grow the Budapest rose for resale many decades ago and he remembers it well, it was also his opinion that it was most likely the Budapest rose. This was especially important to us as we live in Budapest and the Budapest rose is quite rare (practically non-existent) and we did not want to mislabel it.
- The Peace rose is a very big bush with a very big flower and the Budapest is a small bush with a comparatively smaller flower.
- The Peace bush is rather thorny, the Budapest is almost thornless.
- The Peace has somewhat darker and shinier leaves (front and back), although this is not so evident, but the new growth is different in that the Peace leaves are more often fully red on the backs and the Budapest's new leaves are usually not.
- The leaves of the Budapest have 5 leaflets, but the rearmost pair are most often as large as the middle pair. The Peace also has 5, but the rearmost pair are most often smaller then the middle pair.
- Also the Budapest and the Peace do not always bloom at the same time, while every one of our Peace rose bushes bloom together.
- The odor of the Budapest is clearly there (to me), while the Peace has almost no odor (to me).
We will upload Peace/Budapest plant comparison pictures later today or tomorrow to HMF on the Budapest rose photo tab. If there is a particular comparison picture you would be interested in, let me know, as I said the flowering time is usually different, so it has not been possible to compare flowers at the same time in the same picture, only in separate pictures so far, and the Budapest is not nearly as floriferous as the Peace is either. For me the comparison of flower color is also not as good as the Peace is in a much sunnier location in our garden and the Budapest is in a shadier place. The flower color is similar in both roses as they both need the sun to develop their deepest colors. Both are susceptible to mildew, though the Peace seems to be affected by blackspot more than the Budapest does, at least at this moment. But again location is everything and it could be why one has most anything different than the other. But odor, thorns and leaf structure peculiarities are not usually affected by location, or at least not as much, which means the Budapest is almost surely not a Peace.
The two roses are very similar we agree, it was a long process to be sure we were almost surely right. Our rose friend was over this weekend as we finally had a Budapest flower to show him and he was of the opinion it was most likely a Budapest, he was sure it was not a Peace.
Best regards, Celeste Pongrácz

Thanks for the detailed comparison. Budapest is a lovely rose with similar peace coloration. You are so lucky to have such a beautiful rose :-)

Hi Gabriel, Thanks, it is a lovely rose, very much like a smaller version of the Peace. Apart from that, it also has many special connections for us.
My other thought was that it was Peer Gynt, but as we don't have that rose in our garden, we drove today to the rosarium near us and I took photos and brought home a leaf. I will make the plant comparison photos of these two as well and place them up later today, I am even more convinced it is Budapest as it is surely not Peer Gynt either, the leaf color is just too different and again the piles of thorns.
You have some gorgeous photos of equally lovely roses on HMF too! Since you are in Hong Kong, do you ever get to Taiwan to the Imagination Rose Garden?
Best wishes,
Celeste
