I just love this rose, and its extremely, heavenly fragrant blooms. I like very much also the fact that some yellow colour flashes the base of petals, creating a nice and unusual effect in contrast with the clear red changing into purple. A really unique and alqays recognizeable rose, which has got somewhat a touch of 'Mme Isaac Pereire'.
This plant has some well defined srawbacks, however. First of all, in my climate (northern Italy) the vast mayority of flowers will burn badly after few hours of full sun. I don't know any other variety which is so burning prone. There are only two solutions: planting it in a half-shadowed positions, expecially avoiding full sun in central day hours, or cutting all flowers as soon as theu open and placing them in a vase, unless it's a cloudy day (but sometimes it can burn even in cloudy days!).
The other drawback is the rather sparse and leggy growth, with very long and stiff canes which are scarily thorny (I've got nightmares when I've to prune it!). I wonder if anyone has ever tried to grow it as a climber, arching new growths when they are still flexible enough.
The foliage can sometimes show a little rust, even if it rarely grows into a big trouble.

Domenico, can you tell me the color of Othello for you. I have seen so many photos of many different shades of red or purple for this rose. Thank you!
