Could we see more photos of flowers from this plant, thanks? I don't recall seeing red on Cloth of Gold before.

Hello Margaret,
This rose bush was obtained from Peter Beales under this name. I see from the John Hook's remarks (member comments tab) that this nursery's clone is possibly clg. white Maman Cochet. Last year I photographed this same rose at the Arco S. Joge Rose garden in Madeira. The photo is published on my blog Jardim Formoso. It may well be that Miguel Albuquerque also had his plant from Beales. http://jardimformoso.blogspot.com/2009/05/rosa-cloth-of-gold.html

There is however an old plant at Monserrate that is identical to both. We have records that Chromatella/Cloth of Gold was cultivated here from 1885 onwards. I will take some more photos as requested.

I missed that comment - it would explain the appearance (also in your second photo). The Monserrate garden looks lovely.
Cloth of Gold was very popular in Australia, and is quite often found as a survivor in old gardens. It's surprising that it was so widespread, as a gardening book c 1900 (I will supply the reference when I find it again) says it is hard to propagate from cuttings. And it certainly is!
