I plan on planting a hedge of "Home Run" Floribunda roses broken up by 3 trellises where I want to plant maybe an off-white compact climber. I live in the Dallas area and the flower beds exposure is West so it will get a lot of intense afternoon sun. Also the bed is narrow and near a walk path that is used a lot so I need the climber to remain compact so my friends and family dont get stuck with thorns. I would want the plant to eventually top out at about 5-6 feet on the trellis. I would like also a plant that has a nice smell. I know this is off season for planting with the Texas summer fast approaching but I'm really just doing research for next year.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Ya know, I just dont think that I will be able to fit even the Home Run roses in my bed space. The bed is only 18" wide and I cant have the plant extend much beyond that so I think I'll be hard pressed to have much of any rose bush fit. So maybe I should just be asking What to plant in a narrow bed with a Western exposure in Texas?

Lisianthus tend to grow as very narrow plants, about 3 feet tall, and their flowers have a similar quality as roses -- not exactly the same, but very pretty.

Or maybe there are some varieties of mini rose that would stay small enough to work in your space. I know that "mini" refers more to the size of the flowers than the size of the plants, but I think there are some mini roses that only get about 1.5 feet tall, so I'm guessing they probably get about that wide, too.

I know these suggestions don't help you with something to climb on a trellis. How about white bower vine? I would suggest clematis, but I don't know how well they would handle a western exposure in Texas. You might look into whether there are some that handle intense sun better than others.
