I would like to know the origin of a rose named J. de Escofet, bred by S. McGredy, and why it carries this name.

As well as 'J. de Escofet' bred by McGredy in 1917 , there were two other roses Mrs. Ramon de Escofet' bred by Easlea in 1919 and 'Clare de Escofet', also from Easlea in 1920. So it seems these roses may have been named after an English family. In the 1926 edition of <i>The Rose Annual</i>, UK, page 16, in the report of the National Rose Society for the year 1925, there was a sentence: <i>The Council regret the loss during the year of Mr. de Escofet, a very old and valued member of the Council</i> (At a quick glance through the council and officers pages of <i>The Rose Annual</i>'s, I can see no member called Escofet.)
In the 1916 Annual, page 135, R. d'Escofet, Member of the Council, N.R.S. wrote an article entitled <i>The Cultivation of Roses in Town Gardens for Exhibition</i> (My photocopied versions of the 1915 and 1916 Annuals do not include the list of members - darn). However, in the article the author says he lived within three miles of the City of London. And on page 136 there is a picture of Mr. R. de Escofet's garden 'Kingsley Dene', Dulwich, S.E.

Hi Patricia, I've just googled and found your reply. Would you happen to know of where I could get to see the article you talk about, written by R. de Escofet, as he is my great great grandfather and I would very much like to see what he wrote? I only know he was known as being an expert horticulturist. Many thanks, Rich de Escofet

OK, got that. Because I am photocopying a photocopy, it doesn't scan at all well. For me it is quicker to post, than to correct the scan. In the meantime, here is your great great grandfather's garden. it is blurry, but you may be able to see a better reproduction in the Royal National Rose Society's library from the 1916 The Rose Annual, page 136.
