Hi Ingrid ! I was searching HMF for a new climber and was very impressed with your St.Elizabeth of Hungary. Will you tell me how is the fragrance , is it very fragrant like bourbons type can you smell it at a distance of 1-2 feet? How is rebloom is it continuous or only spring flash with seldom blooms after ? Is it thornless or almost thornless? We are planning a gazebo this spring.
I noticed Heirloom roses sell it.
Where you got yours ?
Best wishes,
Oxana

Oxana,
My sincere apologies for finding your post so late. My settings somehow were set for "not to receive any email discussions" notifications from HMF, so I didn't know about your post until I stumbled across it just now. If it helps at this very late date:
I grow St. Elisabeth of Hungary as a big bush, not as a climber, and she's a big 5'+ ball. She blooms prolifically in spring, a little less in this summer's heat (it's now sending out its second flush in late August in CZ 8a, where it's been 90-100+ for well over a month), but as I recall , it had another pretty substantial late fall bloom last year, too. I rarely can smell any rose scent in my garden for some reason, even the "wafting" ones! I do smell a very lovely rose scent from her when I put my nose close to the bloom, though, just as I have to do with all of my roses. She has thorns on the old canes, but all of the new growth is almost completely thornless. I got her from EuroDesert Roses, which is the source of Heirloom's rose by this name, and she's one big, healthy rose with lovely blooms and a great scent. I hope you were able to pick one up from Heirloom!

Hi Marina! I like your roses and bouquets a lot. You have a lot of creativity.
I noticed you grow Siren's Keep Barden 2003 and very interested if you describe me the fragrance of this one. RVR says that you can detect the smell at a few feet away. Is it similar to Zepherine Drouhin bourbon rose? I have one but it is one time bloomer and I miss the fragrance the whole season. Now I am trying to add wafting roses to my garden that blooms 3-4 full flashes either as a bush or climbers.Zone 6b If you can recommend one I appreciate it.

Does Siren's Keep blooms in flashes 3-4 for a season or only once in spring with sporadic rebloom?
Will it work as a climber 6-8 feet?

Thanks a lot,
Oxana

Dear Oxana,
Yes, I do have Siren's Keep in my garden, but it is planted in less than favorable conditions (poor soil, weeds, no supplemental water). In it's third year it is no taller than 3'. It definitely needs more attention to show it's full potential. So far, my Siren's Keep blooms really sparsely and I had never checked it for fragrance.
I am sorry, I am not of much help for you.

Oh, I forgot to answer your question about 'wafting' roses.
For some reason only one rose comes to my mind - Jacques Cartier - you definitely will smell it from a few feet away.
Lots of roses are fragrant but only Jacques Cartier's fragrance can 'travel' through the garden (to my nose, of course).

Hi Hannes! I am very impressed with your rose selection, especially interested in St.Elisabeth of Hungary by Mr.Mark. Heirloom roses sells it here. I like your photos of this rose. I am looking for a very fragrant and constantly blooming climber now for a gazebo. Can you describe me the fragrance , can you smell it at a distance of 1-2 meters away. Is it as strong as Zepherine Drouhin bourbon rose? Does it bloom in spring and then from time to time some flowers or is it in flashes 2-3-4 for a season? Is it thornless?
Thanks a lot,
Oxana

I'm not sure if we'll see Judy back soon. He hasn't been on for ages.

I grow a few of Mr. Márk's roses but don't have many pics, just a couple shots I'm happy to share:

Hi Oxana,

Thank you for your message. I like 'St Elisabeth of Hungary' very much, think it is an excellent rose with beautiful flowers, also very healthy in my garden.

As for fragrance, this is not that easy to say as people seem to experience scent differently. For my nose the fragrance is pleasant but not strong, not wafting and not the heayvy "old-rose-fragrance" you might have in mind. 'St Elisabeth of Hungary' in my garden has a strong first flush and then some flowers from time to time until very late in December. BUT: my plant grows in partial shade, I think the rose would be much more floriferous in full sun. I have the rose on a sort of obelisk, also have seen it on arches but the canes are not that easy to train. So I do think the easiest way to grow it would be as a large shrub with support. The rose is not completely thornless but there are not many prickles either.

Hopefully, my comments have been somewhat helpful for you.
Hannes

Hi Lyn ! I always enjoy your photos and rose bushes. I am searching now to fill one spot in rose flower bed and would like to ask your advice . i have a small garden and try to choose fragrant and long bloomers.
Unfortunately, my Zephirine Drouhin boubon Bizot 1868 turned to be a once bloomer after 4 years.
But I miss her fragrance allure the whole season till next spring. Can you recommend a rose which looks and extremely fragrant like Madame Isaac Pereire rose (Zepherine Drouhin)but has good repeat at least 3 flashes for a season. I need to add it as a contract next to Cotillion Zary 1999
